The Rules

1. The Skinny

For those of you short of attention, here are the basics:

  • Cost per entry: $3
  • Deadline for Picks: Tipoff of first game (3/18/2010 12:15 PM EDT)
  • Scoring: Set number of points per pick per round plus an upset bonus
  • Prizes: The top 5% of entries receive prizes
  • Questions: Read the rules, then if you still have them, email me at andy@uhlpool.org.

2. Entry Fee

  • The entry fee is set at $3 per entry.
  • The entry fee is due before the tipoff of the first game of the tournament if at all possible. (3/18/2010 12:15 PM EDT)
  • If this isn't possible, please contact me and let me know that you will be paying. Theoretically, we're all friends here so it shouldn't be a problem to have some payments come in after the deadline. Turns out that in reality, this isn't the case. I'll be taking a harder line on the payments this year.
  • Payments accepted:
    • Cash
    • Check
  • I can't accept payments through PayPal because they prohibit any type of sports/gaming related transactions.
  • When you submit your payment, please specify the entry names of the entries you wish to pay for and have active in the tournament. It's a good idea to use the payment submission form.
  • I will send you an email with a confirmation that you made it in the pool.
  • If you can't reach me to pay your entry fee, email me and we will discuss arrangements.

3. Brackets

  • Brackets are due before the tipoff of the first game of the tournament.
  • You may have as many entries as you are willing to pay for.
  • If you are late turning in your bracket but you have already paid, I will return your money.

4. Scoring

  • Each round has a point value associated with it. If you get a pick correct, you get the point value for that round added to your total score.
  • The points values range from 2 points for first round games to 33 points for the championship game.
  • The exact point values are 2, 4, 7, 12, 20 and 33.
  • Additionally, if you correctly choose an upset, you will get bonus points equal to the difference between the seeds of the two teams.

5. Standings

  • Standings will be updated as frequently as possible on this website.
  • Please review the bracket to make sure that all of the games have been accurately reported.
  • If an error is found at any time prior to the distribution of the prize money, the standings will be updated to their correct state.
  • Once the prize money has been distributed, there will be no going back.

6. Prizes

  • The top 5% of entries will receive prizes.
  • The value of the prizes is determined by the relative number of points that the winners have. Here is how it works:
    • First, the number of winners is determined. The top 5% of entries receive a prize. The amount of prize winners may be slightly more if there are ties at the bottom end of that range.
    • Then, the highest point value of a non-winner is determined to be the cutoff point value.
    • Each winner receives a portion of the prize money based on how much above the cutoff value their entry is.
    • The sum of all the winners points above the cutoff is determined with this equation:
      WPT = Σ(Points - Cutoff)
    • Then, each winner's shared is calculated with this equation:
      IndividualShare = (Points - Cutoff) * TotalPurse / WPT
  • All of the money that is received through entry fees is returned as prizes. This means that this contest falls under the laws of social betting. If you are worried about such things, please check the legality for your place of residence.
  • There is no profit being made by running this game (unless I win, haha!).

7. Disclosure

  • The picks of all players will be available as soon as the deadline passes (3/18/2010 12:15 PM EDT).
  • Picks may be changed at any point prior to the deadline.
  • There shall be no changing of picks after the deadline.
  • If you are concerned about such things, feel free to download your own copy of the picks to insure that there is no foul play.
